Hormones are our signalling system in the body and they affect how we feel, our hunger, where we store fat deposits, and much more. The hormones that affect our fat storage the most are insulin, cortisol, and leptin, but also the sex hormones estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone play a significant role in fat storage and fat burning.
An excess of cortisol can increase the amount of visceral fat (belly fat), which is the most dangerous type of fat. It can also make it harder to lose weight.
Testosterone stimulates, among other things, muscle growth. It is a hormone that affects everything from mental well-being to physical functions. Testosterone can also inhibit fat gain while a lack of testosterone can promote weight gain.
Men who have testosterone deficiency tend to gain weight more easily.
The hormone DHEA promotes fat burning and balances the effects of cortisol on the body.
The hormone leptin is produced in our fat tissue and plays a big role in regulating our appetite by signalling satiety to the brain. The hormone also helps regulate your body weight and metabolism by increasing energy expenditure, which promotes a decrease in body fat. Disturbances in leptin levels can lead to overeating. With a lack of leptin, there are no signals telling you to stop eating. Likewise, an excess of leptin can make the brain not respond to high levels. This is called leptin resistance and means that the brain does not signal that the stomach is full, but instead assumes that the body is starving.
Insulin is a vital hormone whose primary task is to transport sugar in the blood to the cells where it can be used as energy or stored as fat. Insulin can thus slow down the breakdown of fat, which means that high insulin levels can make it a little more difficult to lose weight. Many symptoms of insulin excess also make the body react with hunger, creating a vicious cycle that can lead to excess weight and diabetes.
Estradiol is the body's strongest estrogen and, among other things, helps regulate metabolism in both women and men. Both low and elevated levels can cause weight gain because the imbalance means that the body is less effective at distributing fat about the body.
Progesterone increases appetite. Low levels can cause the body to retain more water than usual, leading to weight gain and a feeling of bloating.
How safe and reliable is the test?
It is just as safe and reliable as if you had it done within the healthcare system. This, of course, assumes that you follow the instructions and submit the test within the specified time.
So I just spit into a test tube and then you can analyze it?
Well, you'll have to insert a small cotton swab into your mouth. It looks like a pacifier, but it quickly absorbs your saliva. After a few minutes, it will be filled with saliva. You then push the saliva into a specially designed test tube. You screw the airtight cap on and then you just need to put the test tube in the return envelope provided and we'll take care of the rest.
When will I get the results?
You will get the results within a few days, usually within 5 working days, but we guarantee it within 8 days.
Am I completely anonymous? Will my doctor have access to my test results?
No, no one but you can see your test results. Not even we can see them. In theory, our lab can see your test results, but they won't see your name. In other words, you are completely anonymous.
