Iron deficiency and hypothyroidism

Iron is needed to produce thyroid hormones. Studies show a correlation between hypothyroidism and iron deficiency, where individuals with impaired thyroid function on average have lower iron levels than healthy individuals. More research is needed to determine whether the thyroid imbalance causes low iron levels or whether iron deficiency can be one of the underlying causes of the imbalance.
