Testosterone Test

Product Description

Test of testosterone levels

Testosterone is a sex hormone that is secreted in the testes in men. Women also produce a smaller amount of testosterone in their ovaries. The hormone is of great importance in both men and women, through its impact on sexual drive, ability to build or maintain muscles, skeleton, fertility, but also general well-being.

Testosterone is primarily measured to investigate symptoms, but it can also be analyzed to ensure optimal conditions for muscle growth and athletic capacity. Women with symptoms of hormonal disorders may also need to test their testosterone levels. High levels of testosterone in a woman suggest hyperandrogenism, an endocrine condition that can make it difficult to conceive.

How is the test performed?

Our testosterone test is performed through a simple saliva sample that you do yourself at home. For accurate results, the saliva sample should be taken before 10:00 in the morning and on an empty stomach. Note that food intake and/or sampling later in the day can reduce levels by more than 30 percent. When the sample collection is complete, you post the sample in a prepaid envelope to our ISO-certified laboratory for analysis. When your sample is analyzed, you will receive your test result digitally.

Low testosterone

Symptoms of testosterone deficiency usually develop gradually. Common symptoms of low testosterone levels include:

  • Fatigue
  • Lack of energy
  • Increased irritability
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Infertility
  • Menstrual irregularities (women)
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Depression
  • Impaired concentration
  • Poor memory
  • Sleep disturbances

Because testosterone is muscle-building and fat-burning, low levels can result in reduced muscle growth and loss of muscle mass. At the same time, as you lose muscle, you may gain more body fat, which can increase the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, abdominal obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Untreated deficiency can also lead to muscle weakness/osteoporosis.

High testosterone

High testosterone levels in men can be seen in testosterone treatment and in hormone-producing tumours. In women, high testosterone levels can occur in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), ovarian or adrenal tumours, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Testosterone levels above 5-6 nmol/L in women may raise suspicion of ovarian tumours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why might it be a good idea to test my testosterone levels?

Testosterone is an important hormone for human health, especially for men. It plays a crucial role in reproductive function, muscle building, bone strength, body fat distribution, and mental well-being.

Here are some reasons why you might want to test your testosterone:

  1. Symptoms of low testosterone: If you experience symptoms such as decreased sex drive, fatigue, depression, decreased muscle mass, or osteoporosis, it may be an indication that your testosterone is low. A saliva test can confirm this and help you better understand if your testosterone levels are normal.
  2. Infertility: Testosterone is important for sperm production. If you are having difficulty conceiving, testosterone tests can help determine if low testosterone levels may be a factor in this.
  3. Overweight: Testosterone plays a role in regulating the body's fat distribution. Low levels of testosterone can cause the body to store more fat in the abdomen. If you are struggling with excessive weight, it may be a good idea to test your testosterone and take the results into account when planning your weight loss strategy.
  4. High risk of various diseases: Low testosterone levels can increase the risk of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. If you are at high risk for these diseases, it may be a good idea to test your testosterone to identify and treat any underlying issues.

It is always important to discuss any testosterone treatment with a doctor and get advice on what is best for your specific situation.

How safe and reliable is the test?

It is just as safe and reliable as if you had it done within the healthcare system. This, of course, assumes that you follow the instructions and submit the test within the specified time.

So I just spit into a test tube and then you can analyze it?

Well, you'll have to insert a small cotton swab into your mouth. It looks like a pacifier, but it quickly absorbs your saliva. After a few minutes, it will be filled with saliva. You then push the saliva into a specially designed test tube. You screw the airtight cap on and then you just need to put the test tube in the return envelope provided and we'll take care of the rest.

When will I get the result?

You will receive the result within a few days, usually within 5 working days, but we guarantee within 8 days.

Am I completely anonymous? Will my doctor have access to my test results?

No, no one but you can see your test results. Not even we can see them. In theory, our lab can see your test results, but they won't see your name. In other words, you are completely anonymous.

Where is this test produced?

Everything is produced and quality-assured within the EU. Even the analysis is done within the EU. This means that your test result is handled by highly trained personnel with solid expertise.

The Doctor Says...

A testosterone test is a medical test that measures the amount of testosterone in a person's saliva or blood. Testosterone is a male sex hormone that is important for the development of primarily male sexual characteristics. It is also essential for maintaining normal muscle mass and libido. Normal levels of testosterone not only affect the physical but also have a big affect on mental well-being.
