What does the test measure?
TSH
TSH is produced in the pituitary gland and regulates the thyroid's production of T4 and T3.
fT3
Free T3 is the unbound fraction of triiodothyronine, an active thyroid hormone.
fT4
Free T4 is the unbound fraction of thyroxine and serves, among other things, as a precursor to T3.
TPO antibodies
TPO antibodies are antibodies against thyroid peroxidase and can be present in autoimmune thyroid disease.
Common symptoms and when the test may be relevant
TPO antibodies complement hormone levels with information that may be relevant in cases of autoimmune impact on the thyroid. A positive antibody result is not a diagnosis in itself.
Thyroid-related changes can be associated with symptoms such as fatigue, feeling cold or hot, weight changes, heart palpitations, dry skin, constipation, and mood changes.
