What does a positive allergy test mean?

Detectable specific IgE means that the body has formed antibodies to a substance. This is called sensitisation and is not the same as an allergy. Many people are sensitised without any symptoms. An allergy involves symptoms on exposure as well as sensitisation.

What can be tested?

Common airborne allergens include birch and grass pollen, cats, dogs and house dust mites. Common food allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fish and shellfish. Tests may cover individual allergens, selected panels or broad molecular analyses with several hundred allergen components.

Understanding cross-reactions

People with birch pollen allergy may also react to apples, hazelnuts, carrots and stone fruits because the proteins are similar. Symptoms are often mild and limited to the mouth and throat.

Seek urgent medical care for

Difficulty breathing, swelling in the mouth or throat, dizziness or feeling generally unwell after exposure.
