What is Aspergillus mould allergy?

Aspergillus fumigatus is a mould that thrives in warmth and grows in compost, soil, hay and rotting plant material. It can also grow in damp-damaged buildings. The spores are small and reach far down into the airways. In some people, the body forms IgE to the spores.

Symptoms

  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Coughing, wheezing and asthma
  • Symptoms in connection with gardening, compost or hay

In people with asthma or cystic fibrosis, Aspergillus can in rare cases cause allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). This is an inflammation of the airways that needs to be investigated and treated by a doctor.

Where is Aspergillus found?

Aspergillus is present in the environment all year round. Levels can become high when handling compost, soil, hay and wood chips and when renovating damp-damaged houses.

Cross-reactivity

Aspergillus shares some proteins with other moulds, such as Penicillium. That is why they are often tested together.

How to get tested

Aspergillus fumigatus (allergen code m3) is included in our Mould allergy and Mould allergy Plus tests. The test shows whether you have IgE antibodies to Aspergillus. It cannot diagnose ABPA, which requires further investigations.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep composting if I am allergic to Aspergillus?

It is a good idea to wear a respirator and gloves when turning the compost, and not to do it in cramped or enclosed spaces. Talk to your doctor if your asthma gets worse.

Is Aspergillus the same as black mould?

No. Black mould is an everyday name for several different moulds. Aspergillus fumigatus is greenish and most common in compost and soil.

Tests for allergy to Aspergillus mould

You take the sample yourself at home. The tests measure IgE antibodies in a capillary blood sample.

Moulds

Mould spores are found both outdoors, where levels are highest from late summer into autumn, and indoors in damp environments.
