What is salmon allergy?

Salmon allergy is a form of fish allergy. The most important allergen is parvalbumin, Sal s 1, a protein in fish muscle that resembles parvalbumin in other fish. That is why most people with salmon allergy also react to cod and other fish.

Salmon and related fish also contain other allergens, and some people react more clearly to salmon and trout than to white fish. Testing both cod and salmon gives a better picture of which fish may be the problem.

Symptoms

  • Itching and swelling in the mouth
  • Hives and redness
  • Vomiting and stomach ache
  • Breathing difficulties and, in rare cases, anaphylaxis

Where salmon is found

Salmon is found in sushi, gravlax and smoked salmon, salmon bakes, fish balls, pasta dishes and salads, and it can be present in fish stock and minced fish products. Salmon roe can also cause reactions, but roe and fish flesh contain partly different allergens.

How to get tested

Salmon (allergen code f41) is included in our Fish and shellfish allergy test, together with cod and shrimp. The test shows whether you have IgE antibodies to salmon.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat salmon if I am allergic to cod?

Usually not, because the parvalbumins in different fish are similar. Some people tolerate certain fish, but this needs to be investigated by a doctor before you try.

Does the allergy become milder if the salmon is smoked or cured?

No. Parvalbumin withstands both heat and other preparation methods, so the allergen remains in smoked, cured and cooked salmon.

Tests for salmon allergy

You take the sample yourself at home. The tests measure IgE antibodies in a capillary blood sample.

Fish and shellfish

Fish and shellfish allergies often last a lifetime. People who react to one type of fish often react to several, because the most important proteins are similar.
