What is sesame allergy?

In sesame allergy, the immune system reacts to proteins in sesame seeds. The most important allergens are storage proteins that withstand heat, and reactions can be severe even from small amounts. Sesame allergy often starts in childhood and is often persistent. The allergy has become more common as sesame is used in more foods.

Symptoms

  • Itching and swelling in the mouth and on the lips
  • Hives and redness
  • Vomiting and stomach ache
  • Coughing and breathing difficulties
  • A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)

Where sesame is found

Sesame is found in burger buns, crispbread, seed crackers, hummus, tahini, halva and many Asian dishes. Sesame oil can contain protein, especially if it is toasted or cold-pressed. Sesame is one of the allergens that must always be declared on the ingredients list.

Cross-reactivity

Sesame allergy often occurs together with allergy to peanut and tree nuts, but this is not necessarily because the proteins are similar. Which foods you tolerate needs to be assessed one by one.

How to get tested

Sesame (allergen code f10) is included in our Sesame, soya and mustard allergy test. The test shows whether you have IgE antibodies to sesame seed. If you have reacted severely to sesame, you should be assessed by a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have sesame oil if I am allergic?

Refined oil contains little protein, but sesame oil is often toasted or cold-pressed and can contain enough to cause reactions. Avoid it unless your doctor has told you otherwise.

Do children outgrow sesame allergy?

Some do, but sesame allergy is more often persistent than, for example, milk and egg allergy.

This text is general information and does not replace an assessment by a healthcare professional. In an emergency, call 112. If you have questions about your health, contact your doctor.

Tests for sesame allergy

You take the sample yourself at home. The tests measure IgE antibodies in a capillary blood sample.

Nuts, seeds and legumes

Peanut, hazelnut, sesame, soy and mustard are among the 14 allergens that must always be declared on the ingredients list. In adults with birch allergy, reactions are often due to cross-reactivity.
