What is dog allergy?

In dog allergy, the immune system reacts to proteins from the dog's dander, saliva and urine. The most important allergen is called Can f 1, but there are several. One of them, Can f 5, is produced in the prostate and is therefore only found in male dogs. People who only react to this allergen may tolerate female dogs better.

Symptoms

  • Sneezing and a runny or blocked nose
  • Itchy and watery eyes
  • Coughing, wheezing and asthma
  • Itching or a rash where the dog has licked

Are there hypoallergenic dogs?

No dog breed is completely allergy-free. Breeds that do not shed, such as poodles, are sometimes called hypoallergenic, but studies have not shown that they spread less allergen in the home. The amount of allergen varies more between individual dogs than between breeds.

Cross-reactivity

Dogs and cats have partly similar proteins, such as albumin. Some people therefore react to both, and sometimes also to horses and other furry animals.

How to get tested

Dog (allergen code e5) is included in our Cat and dog allergy and Airborne allergy tests and in Allergy Test Plus. The test shows whether you have IgE antibodies to dog.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a dog even though I am allergic?

It depends on how severe your symptoms are. If you have asthma, you should be extra careful. Talk to your doctor before getting a dog if you know you are allergic.

What does it mean if I only react to certain dogs?

The amount of allergen differs between individual dogs. It may also be because you only react to allergens found in male dogs.

Tests for dog allergy

You take the sample yourself at home. The tests measure IgE antibodies in a capillary blood sample.

Furry animals

The allergens from cats and dogs are found in dander and saliva. They are light and sticky and travel on clothing to schools, workplaces and public transport.
