What is peach allergy?

Peach allergy comes in several forms:

  • Birch-related allergy. The protein Pru p 1 resembles Bet v 1 in birch pollen. It usually causes an itchy mouth from raw peach and is the most common form in northern and central Europe.
  • LTP allergy. The protein Pru p 3 is a so-called lipid transfer protein that is found in the peel and withstands heat. It can cause stronger reactions and is most common around the Mediterranean.
  • Cypress-related allergy. The protein Pru p 7 resembles a protein in cypress pollen and can cause facial swelling.

Symptoms

  • Itching and tingling in the mouth and throat
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue or face
  • Hives and stomach problems
  • With LTP allergy, sometimes breathing difficulties and anaphylaxis

Cross-reactivity

Peach is a stone fruit, and people who react to peach often also react to nectarine, apricot, cherry and plum. The birch-related form is also linked to apple and birch. LTP allergy can be linked to nuts such as hazelnut and to pollen from plane trees.

How to get tested

Peach (allergen code f95) is included in our Fruit allergy test, together with apple and kiwi. The test shows whether you have IgE antibodies to peach but does not distinguish between the different forms. If you have had severe reactions, the allergy should be investigated by a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat peeled peach?

With LTP allergy, much of the allergen is in the peel, and peeled fruit may cause fewer symptoms. With the birch-related form, peeling rarely helps. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure.

Can I tolerate canned peach?

The allergen behind the birch-related form is destroyed by heat, so canned and cooked peach is usually fine. LTP withstands heat and can cause reactions even from canned fruit.

Tests for peach allergy

You take the sample yourself at home. The tests measure IgE antibodies in a capillary blood sample.

Fruit and vegetables

An itchy mouth from raw fruit and vegetables is usually due to cross-reactivity with pollen. Heating often destroys the sensitive proteins, but not all of them.
