What is celery allergy?

Celery allergy applies to both celery stalks and celeriac. In people with birch allergy, it is often due to the protein Api g 1, which resembles Bet v 1 in birch pollen. Celery allergy is also linked to mugwort pollen – this is called the celery–mugwort–spice syndrome.

Unlike many other birch-related allergies, celery can cause severe reactions, and some of its allergens withstand heat.

Symptoms

  • Itching and swelling in the mouth and throat
  • Hives
  • Stomach problems
  • Breathing difficulties and, in rare cases, anaphylaxis

Where celery is found

Celery is found in stock and bouillon, soups, stews, salads, juices and spice mixes such as celery salt and curry powder. Celery is one of the allergens that must always be declared on the ingredients list.

Cross-reactivity

Celery belongs to the same family as carrot, parsley, fennel and dill and spices such as aniseed, coriander and caraway. Cross-reactions between them are common.

How to get tested

Celery (allergen code f85) is included in our Vegetable allergy test, together with carrot and bell pepper. The test shows whether you have IgE antibodies to celery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tolerate cooked celery if raw celery causes symptoms?

Some people can, but celery also contains allergens that withstand heat. If you have had severe symptoms, avoid celery in all forms until the allergy has been investigated.

Why do I react to stock cubes?

Many stocks and bouillons contain celery. Read the ingredients list – celery must always be declared.

Tests for celery allergy

You take the sample yourself at home. The tests measure IgE antibodies in a capillary blood sample.

Fruit and vegetables

An itchy mouth from raw fruit and vegetables is usually due to cross-reactivity with pollen. Heating often destroys the sensitive proteins, but not all of them.
